Staying Safe On The Internet

Thieves don't have to break into your home or go through your trash to steal personal information anymore. Instead, they try to get you to send them that information in a high-tech scam called phishing.

If you receive an e-mail asking for bank account and social security numbers, credit card information or other confidential material, it could be a phishing attempt. The National Cyber Security Alliance reports that one in four computers is a target of phishing each month.

Before sending any information, check out the purported company or person asking for the information to make sure it is legitimate. If you feel you have been a victim of phishing, contact the credit bureaus and the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-ID-THEFT. Your insurance company may also offer protection against identity theft.
